Mention Context
A classification of how a brand is mentioned within an AI answer — as a recommendation, a comparison point, a cautionary example, or a passing reference — rather than just whether it's mentioned.
Common categories
Typical context buckets include: recommended (named as the pick), listed (named among several options with no clear favorite), compared (named opposite a specific competitor), cautioned (named with a caveat or limitation), and referenced (named in passing, unrelated to any evaluation). The same prompt can produce different contexts across engines or over time.
Why it matters more than a mention count
Two brands can each have ten mentions in a given period and be in completely different positions — one recommended nine times out of ten, the other listed as an also-ran nine times out of ten. Mention context is what separates those two outcomes when a raw mention count would treat them as equal.
