Visibility on one engine doesn't carry over to the next — each one gets checked on its own.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI and Copilot mention your brand when someone asks a relevant question. It's the equivalent of search rankings — but for conversational answers instead of ranked links.

Why it's different from SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of links a person then has to click through. AI answers skip that step — the model synthesizes a direct answer, often naming only a handful of brands. If you're not one of them, you're invisible in that conversation, regardless of how well you rank in traditional search. And unlike a search results page, there's rarely a "page two" to fall back to — you're either part of the answer or you're not.

What determines whether AI mentions you

  • How clearly your website describes what you do and for whom
  • Whether independent sources (reviews, comparisons, press) mention you
  • How often and how positively you're cited relative to competitors
  • Structured, factual content that's easy for models to reference
  • How consistently the same facts about your brand appear across the web, since consistency builds confidence in what a model says

A concrete example

Imagine two brands in the same category. One has a handful of vague mentions scattered across the web and an inconsistent description of what it actually does. The other is described the same way — clearly and specifically — across its own site, a few independent reviews, and a couple of comparison articles. When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation in that category, the second brand is far more likely to be the one the model reaches for with confidence, even if the first brand is just as capable a product.

Common mistakes that hurt AI visibility

  • Only checking one AI engine, or checking once and assuming it stays that way
  • Focusing exclusively on branded prompts and ignoring the category questions that shape consideration first
  • Inconsistent or vague descriptions of the product across the sites that mention it
  • No visibility into which competitors are being recommended instead, or why
  • Treating AI visibility as a one-time project instead of something to track over time

How to measure it

Measuring AI visibility means tracking the actual questions your buyers ask across each AI engine, checking whether and where your brand appears, and comparing that to your competitors. That's what MentioningYou does — run a free check to see where you stand today.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No, though the two overlap. SEO measures where a page ranks in a list of links. AI visibility measures whether and how your brand is named inside a generated answer, where a model might mention only a handful of brands at all.

Which AI platforms should I be tracking?

At minimum the ones your buyers are most likely to use for research — typically ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI and Copilot. Visibility on one does not guarantee visibility on another, so tracking a single engine gives an incomplete picture.

Can I improve my AI visibility myself, without a tool?

Yes, to a degree — publishing clear, factual, well-structured content and earning independent coverage both help. What's hard to do manually is checking multiple engines across many prompts on an ongoing basis and knowing which specific gap to fix next.

Does AI visibility replace the need for SEO?

No. Search still drives a large share of discovery, and the two disciplines share a lot of the same underlying work — clear content, credible sources, a strong reputation. AI visibility is an additional layer to track, not a replacement.

How quickly can AI visibility change?

It depends on the engine. Some retrieve information from the live web and can reflect new content and coverage relatively quickly; others rely more on training data and change more slowly. That's part of why ongoing tracking matters more than a single check.
