Google SGE

"Search Generative Experience," Google's original name for its AI-generated search summaries before they were rebranded and launched broadly as AI Overviews.

What it was

SGE was the experimental, opt-in label Google used during 2023-2024 while testing AI-generated answer summaries inside Search Labs. When Google rolled the feature out broadly to all users, it renamed it "AI Overviews," and later introduced the separate "AI Mode" surface for fuller conversational search.

Why it's worth knowing

A lot of early GEO and AI-visibility research and tooling was written using the "SGE" name, so it's mainly useful now as a historical reference point when reading older material. Current tracking and terminology should use "AI Overview" and "AI Mode," since SGE no longer exists as a distinct product.
