AI Mode vs. AI Overviews

A comparison of Google's two generative-search surfaces: AI Overviews, summary boxes inside regular search results, and AI Mode, a separate, fully conversational search experience.

The difference

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above or within traditional Google Search results, alongside the normal blue links. AI Mode is a distinct tab or experience that replaces the results page with a multi-turn, chatbot-style interface capable of follow-up questions and broader query fan-out, generally pulling from more sources per query than an Overview does.

How sourcing differs

Because AI Mode can break one user question into several sub-searches, it tends to draw on a wider and sometimes different set of pages than the more compact AI Overview for the same topic. A domain can be well represented in one surface and absent from the other.

Why the distinction matters

Brands aiming for AI visibility on Google need to check presence in both surfaces, since ranking well in one doesn't guarantee appearing in the other, and they're tracked differently — AI Overviews are interspersed with regular rankings, while AI Mode is its own destination users have to opt into.
