Tool Use
An AI model's ability to call external tools — a web search, a calculator, a code interpreter — mid-conversation instead of answering only from what it learned during training.
What it means
Tool use lets a model recognize when its own trained knowledge isn't enough and reach outside itself for an answer. That's the mechanism behind a model deciding, mid-response, to run a web search rather than guess.
Why it matters for AI visibility
Every real-time citation, every live price comparison, every "here's what I found" answer depends on tool use being triggered. Whether a platform decides to search at all — versus answering from memory — directly affects whether current content about a brand ever gets a chance to be seen.
