Non-Branded Query

A prompt that doesn't name any specific brand, such as "best project management tool for a remote team."

Why these matter most for discovery

Non-branded, category-level questions are where a brand either gets introduced to someone who's never heard of it — or doesn't. This is the earliest and often highest-value moment in AI-influenced discovery.

Harder to win, more valuable to win

Because the engine has to choose which brands to name with no prompt from the user, appearing in answers to non-branded queries is harder to earn than showing up in branded ones — but it reaches people earlier in their decision, before a shortlist has formed.
