Bing Chat / Copilot History
A naming note: "Bing Chat" was Microsoft's original branding for its AI chat assistant before it was renamed to Copilot.
What changed
Microsoft launched an AI-powered chat experience in Bing in early 2023, initially called "Bing Chat" (and briefly "the new Bing"). Microsoft later consolidated its AI-assistant branding under the single name "Copilot" across Bing, Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365, retiring the "Bing Chat" name.
Why it's worth knowing
Older articles, screenshots, and even some tools still refer to "Bing Chat," "Bing AI," or the early internal codename "Sydney," which can cause confusion when comparing historical data to current Copilot behavior. The product lineage is continuous, so older Bing Chat citation behavior is a reasonable proxy for early Copilot behavior, even though the name itself is deprecated.
