AI Overviews vs. Featured Snippets

Featured snippets quote a single source verbatim; AI Overviews synthesize new text from multiple sources — a structural difference with real consequences for clicks and attribution.

What actually happens

A featured snippet pulls an exact passage from one page and displays it with a link back to that page — the wording is the publisher's own, unchanged, in a "position zero" box above the regular results. An AI Overview instead uses Google's query fan-out technique to gather content from a much wider set of sources (commonly cited as roughly 8 to 13) and generates new, synthesized prose that isn't a direct quote from any single page, with inline citations linking to the pages it drew from. Featured snippets are a long-standing, narrower Search feature that appears on a relatively small share of queries, while AI Overviews now appear far more broadly across US search traffic.

How they relate to each other

The two features are not mutually exclusive in Google's system, but in practice a query that triggers an AI Overview more often shows the Overview instead of a classic featured snippet for that same result, since both are competing to serve the same "quick answer" intent at the top of the page. Because an AI Overview cites multiple sources rather than elevating one, being the featured-snippet source for a query doesn't guarantee being a cited source in that query's AI Overview.

Why it matters for brand visibility

The attribution model is different: a featured snippet sends a clear, singular click-through to one page, while an AI Overview citation is one of several links competing for a much smaller share of attention inside a synthesized answer. Structuring content to directly and clearly answer a specific question still helps with both, but marketers should treat AI Overview citation as a visibility and trust signal more than a guaranteed traffic driver, and measure it differently than snippet performance.

Frequently asked questions

If I own the featured snippet for a query, will I automatically be cited in its AI Overview?

Not automatically. AI Overviews synthesize from multiple sources chosen independently by the AI Overview system, so snippet ownership doesn't guarantee inclusion, though being a strong, clear, directly-answering source improves the odds for both.

Do featured snippets still exist alongside AI Overviews?

Yes, featured snippets remain a distinct Search feature, but on queries where an AI Overview appears, it commonly takes the place of the box a featured snippet would otherwise occupy.

Which one sends more traffic to my site?

Featured snippets generally drive a clearer, more direct click to the single source page, while AI Overviews synthesize an answer that can reduce the need to click through at all, since the summary itself may satisfy the user's query.
