From SGE to AI Overviews: What Changed
Google's AI-generated search summaries started as an opt-in Search Labs experiment called SGE in May 2023 and became a mainstream, rebranded Search feature called AI Overviews in May 2024.
What actually happened
Google introduced the Search Generative Experience (SGE) at Google I/O in May 2023 as an opt-in feature inside Search Labs, its program for testing early-stage Search experiences with willing users. SGE ran through 2023 and into 2024 as a labs-only test while Google iterated on it. At Google I/O in May 2024, Google rebranded the feature as "AI Overviews" and rolled it out to all users in the United States, moving it out of the experimental Labs opt-in and into the default Search experience. From there, Google expanded AI Overviews to additional countries through 2024 and 2025, including a confirmed rollout to Germany and other European markets in March 2025.
Why the rename matters
The shift from SGE to AI Overviews wasn't just cosmetic — it marked the transition from an opt-in experiment a subset of users had to actively enable, to a feature shown by default within regular Google Search results to the general public. That change in default exposure is what made AI Overview visibility a mainstream SEO and brand-visibility concern rather than a niche one.
Why it matters for brand visibility
Because AI Overviews are now a default part of Search rather than an opt-in test, any content strategy built around ranking in Google Search now has to account for the possibility that the top of the results page is an AI-generated summary rather than a list of blue links, in an increasing share of markets and query types.
Frequently asked questions
Is SGE still a separate thing from AI Overviews today?
No. SGE was the testing-phase name; Google rebranded and launched the same underlying feature as AI Overviews in May 2024, and SGE as a distinct Labs-only experience is retired.
When did AI Overviews become available outside the US?
Google expanded AI Overviews internationally through 2024 and 2025, with a confirmed rollout to Germany and other European countries announced in March 2025; availability has continued to expand by market since.
Did the underlying technology change between SGE and AI Overviews, or just the name?
Google iterated on the underlying system (including introducing the query fan-out approach) across this period, so it was both a rebrand and a continued technical evolution rather than a pure name change alone.
