Query Fan-out

When an AI engine breaks a single question into multiple related sub-queries before generating a combined answer.

How it works

Rather than answering a broad question directly, some engines internally generate several narrower related queries, retrieve results for each, and then synthesize them into one response — meaning a brand can influence the final answer through any one of several underlying sub-queries.

Why it complicates tracking

Because the visible prompt and the queries actually run behind the scenes aren't the same thing, visibility tracking has to account for the range of related questions an engine might fan a topic out into, not just the literal wording typed in.
