Perplexity Focus Mode
A Perplexity setting that restricts a search to a specific content type or source set — such as Academic, Writing, or particular web domains — instead of the general web.
How it works
Focus modes narrow Perplexity's retrieval step to a chosen category, such as academic papers, social discussion, or video, before generating an answer, instead of pulling from the open web broadly. This changes both which sources are eligible for citation and the tone of the resulting answer.
Why it matters for visibility
A brand's content can be highly visible in general web search on Perplexity but effectively invisible in a mode like Academic if it doesn't have the matching content type indexed there. Tracking should account for focus mode when interpreting results, since a "no mention" in one mode may just reflect a mismatch between content format and that mode's source pool.
