Answer Engine

Any interface that resolves a query with a single generated or synthesized answer, rather than a ranked list of links to choose from.

Examples

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews all function as answer engines — each takes a question and returns a direct response, often naming only a handful of options, instead of a page of results to browse.

Why the distinction matters

Traditional search has a "page two" to fall back to. An answer engine usually doesn't — a brand is either part of the synthesized answer or it isn't part of the conversation at all for that query.
