OpenAI Search Index
The web index OpenAI built to power ChatGPT Search and browsing, populated by its own crawlers rather than fully licensed from another search engine.
What it is
To support real-time search inside ChatGPT, OpenAI operates crawlers — including GPTBot for training and a separate search-oriented crawler — that fetch and index web pages, similar in concept to how Google or Bing build a search index. Early versions of ChatGPT's browsing leaned partly on a licensed search provider; OpenAI has since built out more of its own retrieval infrastructure to power ChatGPT Search directly.
Why it matters
If a page isn't crawled and indexed by OpenAI's bots, it structurally cannot appear as a live citation in ChatGPT Search results, regardless of how well the brand ranks in Google. Confirming that a site is accessible to OpenAI's crawlers is a technical prerequisite for AI-visibility work on this platform, not an optional nice-to-have.
