ChatGPT Browsing Mode
The capability that lets ChatGPT fetch and read live web pages instead of answering only from its training data.
How it works
When browsing is triggered — automatically in modern ChatGPT, or via an explicit search toggle in older versions — the model issues search queries, retrieves a set of web results, and reads page content before composing an answer. This is distinct from the model's static training data: pages it browses can be fetched at the moment of the query rather than baked in months earlier.
Why it matters for visibility
A brand only shows up in a browsed answer if its pages actually rank in the underlying results and are accessible to OpenAI's fetching bots. That makes technical crawlability and up-to-date on-page content as important as they are for traditional SEO, since ChatGPT is performing a live retrieval step rather than just recalling what it memorized during training.
