DeepSeek
A Chinese AI lab and chatbot known for releasing high-performing open-weight models at a fraction of the training cost of Western labs, which caused a major market stir in early 2025.
What it is
DeepSeek released models — notably DeepSeek-R1 — that matched or approached leading Western models on many benchmarks while reportedly being trained far more cheaply, and it offers both a consumer chat app and open-weight models others can self-host. Its chat app includes a web search toggle for current-information queries.
Relevance to brand tracking
DeepSeek's chat app has a real, if geographically skewed, user base, and its open-weight models are increasingly used by third parties to build other AI products, so brand mentions can propagate through DeepSeek-derived tools indirectly. For most Western B2B brands it's currently a secondary tracking priority compared to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, but it's worth monitoring given how quickly its usage has grown.
