Dark Funnel

The portion of the customer journey influenced by an AI-generated answer that leaves no attributable trail — a user gets a recommendation from an AI platform, then visits the brand directly or searches its name, with no referral data connecting the two.

Why it happens

When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a recommendation and then opens a new tab to type the brand name directly, that visit shows up in analytics as direct or organic branded traffic — the AI platform that actually drove the decision never appears as a referrer. The influence is real; the attribution data simply isn't there.

How it differs from dark traffic

Dark traffic describes unattributed visits themselves — the sessions that show up with no clear source. The dark funnel is the broader concept: the whole stage of the buying journey, including consideration and decision-making that never touches a trackable click, that happens inside AI conversations before any traffic is generated at all.

How teams infer it

Since it can't be measured directly, the dark funnel is usually estimated indirectly — by correlating spikes in AI visibility (mentions, recommendation rate) with subsequent spikes in direct or branded-search traffic, rather than by tracing individual user journeys.
