Focus modes let a user restrict Perplexity’s retrieval to a specific category of source — academic papers, social discussion, or the open web — before it even starts ranking results.
What actually happens
Perplexity offers a "Focus" selector that changes which pool of sources a query draws from before ranking and synthesis happen.
