Context Injection

Adding extra information into a model's prompt at run time — retrieved web pages, a system prompt, a user's location — before it generates a response.

How it works

The text a model actually sees when generating a response is rarely just the user's question. Platforms inject additional context around it: system instructions, retrieved search results, conversation history, sometimes account or location details, all assembled before the model starts generating.

Why it matters for AI visibility

Retrieval, tool use, and system prompts are all forms of context injection, and together they determine what sources a model actually has in front of it when it writes an answer. Getting a brand's content injected into that context — by being retrieved, cited, or indexed — is the practical mechanism content strategy tries to influence, since a model can't mention what it never sees.
